Communication Design vs Digital Media Design vs Branded Environment

If you're planning to study one of our courses, you'll need to decide between the Communication Design, Digital Media Design and Branded Environment streams. All of our courses are grounded in the traditional areas of visual communication and offer the same subjects in the first year. This allows you the opportunity to change streams if your career objectives change as you learn more about the industry.

Communication Design

Communication design is the name of the stream that we used to call graphic design. The reason for the name change is that graphic design is now seen as just one element in a broad and evolving range of visual communication disciplines. Graduates from this stream have succeeded not only in the area of graphic design but in advertising, publishing, typography and more. The nature of the industry is such that designers are often required to work across a range of disciplines and media including the digital environment. The communication design stream aims to produce imaginative designers who work creatively in areas where information is primarily conveyed by visual means.

Digital Media Design

Digital media design is for students who are interested in time-based visual communication, or in other words, anything that moves. Areas of study include internet design, anything interactive (e.g. touch screens), CD ROMs, DVDs, digital interfaces, digital animation, video games, Flash technology, mobile phones and a whole lot more. There is an increasing demand for skilled designers who specialise in this exciting area.

Branded Environment

Branded environment is all about the application of 'brand language' to 3-dimensional spaces i.e. logos, colour, sound, imagery, textures, messages etc. The branded environment is where we take elements of a company's brand to create vibrant and exciting expressions of the brand in a variety of spaces. Branded environment designers work in fields such as retail, exhibitions, museums, events, interactive spaces, branding opportunities, outdoor signage, 3D design, and way finding systems (e.g. airports).

Commercial Interiors

A commercial interior is a spatial environment where the act of commerce plays out. Commercial interior design absorbs the design of any branded commercial environment and affects the experiential nature of its participants.

Pre-Press / Digital Production

Pre-press / digital production is a unique pathway for students keen to work in a number of digital production environments such as graphic design or finished art studios, print pre-press studios, or magazine and newspaper publishing. The program equips students with the skills to carry out tasks such as design, text and image assembly, the preparation of files and digital workflow, and the transformation of text and images for final production. Students who have successfully completed either the Certificate III in Printing and Graphic Arts (Graphics Pre-press) or the Diploma of Printing and Graphic Arts (Digital Production), may be eligible for either the Associate Degree or Bachelor of Applied Design programs. This pathway is an option for those students who wish to change their focus to design rather than the printing and graphic technology industry. To gain entry into these degrees, the student will be required to meet certain criteria such as the submission of a portfolio, interview and/or an IELTS band score of 6.0 and above.

Accelerated study options

The Billy Blue Bachelor of Applied Design is available with an accelerated option. This means students who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 65% across all subjects will be invited to study a full-time semester during the Australian summer (usually holiday break) or whenever their 3rd or 5th semester falls (according to when they commence). What this means is that with a consistent level of high achievement, students will be able to complete a 3 year Bachelor degree in 2 years. This option is available for Australian and overseas students.
